The turquoise-browed Motmot is a beautifully colored medium sized bird that lives from the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico down to Costa Rica. It lives in fairly open habitats such as forest edge, gallery forest and scrubland. About the color it can be said that it has a mostly green body. There is a bright blue stripe above the eye and a blue-bordered black patch on the throat. Also the flight feathers and upper side of the tail are blue.

These are medium sized birds and measure approximately 34 cm long and weigh about 65 grams. It has also been known that motmots live somewhere between 12 to 14 years.

Some studies have shown that motmots move their tail back and forth in a wag-display when they detect predators and that the display is likely to communicate that the motmot is aware of the predator and is prepared to escape.

If you are looking for an all day adventure, Auto-Safari Chapin is the solution it.

What you can do here:

Be in the middle of an exotic collection of animals in this car safari

Eat around like a king

Flop around in a huge pool

Take a gorgeous ride in a boat

You can take a pleasure walk in their zoo

You don’t require a car for the safari. You can rent one from the safari at the same price of the entrance fee of your car. You can drive close to the animals. When I say close, it’s because they will be right out your window!

The park has different entrance fees: $8 for only the safari ride and $12for the safari ride, the pool, the boat ride, the zoo and an enormous lunch with a drink and dessert. The kids get discounts too. My advice for you is to take the $12 package because the food is great and much more expensive when you buy them separately.

Between the safari exhibits, you get to relax in a rest stop where the kids can play around and you can stretch your legs.

Lanquin National Park was one of the first protected areas declared in Guatemala. Lanquin caves is also a sacred site used by the many of the Mayas from all over Guatemala, who believe the cave is the “heart of heaven”, and that in the depths of the cave “the secret of centuries is hidden”. It is located 1 km away from the town of Lanquin, off the highway that runs between Lanquin and Coban. It is an enormous and beautiful complex with limestone formations of extraordinary beauty.

There are many interesting things to see here such as a sharp pointed rock altar used by modern and ancient Mayan people carry out ceremonies and rituals. There is also the Bridge of the Fallen King, called like that because when King Leopold of Belgium came to Guatemala and visited the caves in 1958 he crossed the wooden bridge, it broke and the King fell. Also from the depths of the cave, the Lanquin River emerges.

A very interesting thing is that no-one has ever discovered the end of this cave system. Luckily for adventurers there is a 400m lighted trail inside that takes you for a 45 min round trip. There are also bridges and stairs to facilitate the access. However, it is always humid and a bit slippery so you need to be careful.
