Professional photographers know exactly what they’re looking for when they purchase a digital camera. Years of experience and fine tuning digital cameras every day makes the choice clear for them. For the rest of us, a new camera purchase can be a daunting experience. I know when I first got into digital cameras the technology seemed a little intimidating- but it doesn’t have to be. Here’s a short guide with ten things to look for when, as an amateur photographer, you’re ready to replace that antique sitting on the top shelf of the closet.

1. Resolution – When digital cameras first came out, it was all about the megapixels. There was a wide variety of sizes (and prices) available- however, now most of even the smallest digital cameras are 5 megapixels, which is more than adequate for your typical 4×6 vacation photos and the occasional 8×10. The time to go larger is when you want to regularly create larger pictures- or you want to be able to zoom in on areas of specific detail and print those. The compromise you must make for those larger pictures is more space used on your memory card, so if you get a higher megapixel camera, make sure to pick some extra cards.

So you have finally decided to go out and get that digital camera that you have always wanted. But how can you be so sure about which one to by? Sony, Nikon Coolpix, or a Digicam, the list is endless, what matters is, how you decide that the model that you are going in for, isn’t just big on words and empty on performance. Well, there are certain basic factors that you need to know before you choose the type of camera that you buy.

Megapixels: The higher the better, and more expensive too. This is one of the key factors behind choosing a digital camera. It defines the number of pixels and the more the number, the clearer the resolution of the picture you take. If you just want to share pictures over the computer, then a 2 megapixel camera works just fine. 3 megapixels will let you print for normal use, while 5 or above is professional quality.

Optical Zoom versus Digital Zoom: This one’s simple; digital enhances the image size more, but hurts the picture clarity whereas optical zooms allow enlarged pictures with good clarity.

As a title fight in the mobile phone world, Nokia vs. Blackberry is about as exciting as it would come. Not only are both giants in their respective fields but, ever since Nokia debuted their N-series smartphones, they have been in direct competition for control over the entire smartphone market. As things stand, there is no clear winner, nor will there be for quite some time as, with every new generation of mobile phones that pop up, the tide seems to shift back and forth.

Comparing Features of the Nokia N95 8GB and Blackberry Curve 8320

For many mobile phone users, the first thing that is noticed about a mobile phone is its size. In this, there is no clear decision between the Nokia N95 8GB and the Blackberry Curve 8320.  Although the Blackberry Curve 8320 is much slimmer, it is also wider and longer, making the difference in thickness seem slightly less impressive. Neither phone is overly chunky, really, but both are certainly not as slim as some of their counterparts, as is acceptable from a smartphone.

Touchscreen mobile phones sell like hotcakes nowadays, thanks to the iPhone. Love it or hate it, it gave other manufacturers a kick up the backside to produce touchscreen mobile phones that could top it. And now, there are two new contenders: the Samsung Pixon and the phenomenal Blackberry Storm.

Samsung Pixon – the touchscreen mobile phone with 8 massive megapixels

What happens if you take a sleek touchscreen interface, and weld it into a mobile phone that has one of the best cameras known to man? You get the Samsung Pixon, a handset that may very possibly dominate the world of camera-equipped mobile phones this Christmas! The touchscreen interface no the Samsung Pixon is truly a joy to use, and easily measures up to more famous mobile phones (oh ok, the iPhone). But aside from the amazing usability is the long list of features in the Samsung Pixon. The 8 megapixel camera is obviously the star of the show here, as it’s more powerful than most other mobile phones on the market, and features things like face/smile/blink detection, and image stabiliser, to make the Samsung Pixon a properly powerful snapper. They’re two of the most powerful mobile phones on the planet, this year, and as we roll on towards Christmas, the fight between the Blackberry Storm and the Sony Ericsson X1 is set to get even more intense. But which if these two superphones should YOU buy?

Blackberry Storm – more than just a storm in a teacup

It’s the first ever Blackberry mobile phone with a touchscreen… it’s the first ever mobile phone to feature a moving, clicky screen… and it’s gorgeous… it can only be the Blackberry Storm. But is it as good as people have been predicting? Well, there’s no denying the Blackberry Storm is cool. Everything from the name to the design, to the list of features is simply brilliant. What really sets the Blackberry Storm apart, though, is that touchscreen, which actually moves down into the phone when you press it. The reason for that? When you press on, say, the virtual keyboard on screen, it feels just like you’re pressing a real key. It makes typing on the touchscreen a much nicer experience, and much easier than a traditional touchscreen. That’s a good thing, because needless to say, you get the usual Blackberry email access on the Blackberry Storm. Include HSDPA internet, GPS and a 3 megapixel camera, and the Blackberry Storm becomes a seriously appealing prospect.
